Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Initiative

The initiative is a focused campaign to improve consistency in the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in university labs. As part of the initiative, every U of A lab must conduct a hazard assessment and, based on the findings, establish the specific PPE protocols required for each person. Then each member of the lab will be required to sign a form indicating they are aware of the requirements.

Certain basics are expected, such as lab coats, safety glasses, closed-toe shoes, gloves and long pants. In some cases, where the risk is negligible or where the hazard is controlled by other means, it is possible to change the PPE requirements for a specific activity. A hazard assessment must be conducted to deal with special situations where you need to deviate from the basic laboratory PPE.
